An article today in Forbes cateches up with Jay Freeman who runs Cydia, the app store synonymous with jailbroken devices. It offers themes, tweaks and all sorts of software not available in the App Store. The store also offers a good method of data collection when it comes to figuring out the number of devices which have been jailbroken. According to Freeman, that number eclipsed 7 million in just four days, making it the most popular jailbreak in history.
The bulk of those jailbreaks were 5.15 million iPhones which accounted for roughly 71 percent. 1.35 million iPads and 400,000 iPod touches also used the new evasi0n jailbreak.
These are impressive numbers and it seems clear that a good portion of end users enjoy the full device control offered by a jailbreak. The hackers behind the evasi0n jailbreak also did a great job in promoting the launch. The countdown clock helped build excitement and also provide for a window when the jailbreak would be released. Once available, the software download and process for jailbreaking an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch using evasi0n was relatively easy.
Are you one of the 7 million? Why did you jailbreak?
