Four days after pre-orders for the 4th generation iPad went live, shipping times have already slipped to one week. The iPad 4 was only an under-the-hood upgrade to the iPad 3rd generation, and there was never as much excitement around the iPad 4 as there was the iPad mini — yet even as a pedestrian device as this sold out in advance after just a few days.
Even though the new iPad hasn’t hit shelves yet, Geekbench has already seen the first trickle of stats for the device. Like its predecessor, the iPad 4 has 1GB of RAM, but has received a major speed boost. The new A6X processor is being clocked at 1.4GHz, and is more than twice as fast as the iPad 3 in GeekBench’s tests. As these devices get into people’s hands on Fridays, you’ll probably see more benchmarks come in, and this number fluctuate a bit before settling down. But as first glance, it’s impressive just how much more the 4th generation iPad is packing.
